El equipo A listo para salir /The A team ready to go!

Ya estamos, pero con un equipo de españoles, cada paso siempre es una aventura! A las tres de la madrugada el jueves (23 de julio) dispararon nuestras alarmas… era la hora de cargar una furgoneta y dos coches con 15 maletas grandes más equipajes de mano y tomar carretera hacia el aeropuerto. De verdad, los dos vuelos de KLM eran bastante placenteros, con buena compañía y mucho ruido desde los 10 asientos que acomodaron a los de sudadera granate y camiseta azul… Los King’s Kids de España!  De verdad, la tripulación nos trató con deferencia, aunque el país de KLM, Holanda, fue el último adversario vencido por España en su marcha hacia el campeonato del mundo. Nos despidieron desde el interfono, y una de las azafatas incluso se unió en una de nuestras innumerables guerras de cojín, dando un acierto sobre la cabeza de Carlos.

We finally arrived, but with a team of Spaniards every step of the way is always an adventure! At three o’clock in the morning on July 23rd, all our alarms went off…it was time to load up the van and two other cars with 15 pieces of luggage plus hand carries and hit the road for the airport. The two KLM flights went very well, with great service and a lot of noise from the 10 seats that held our burgundy and blue clad King’s Kids team.  The crew treated us very special, even though Holland (the national sponsor of KLM airlines) was the last team that Spain beat to win the World Cup final.  They said good-bye to our team on the intercom and even the stewardess got in on our team pillow fight, giving Carlos a good whack in the head.

Después de 18 horas de viaje, aterrizamos en el aeropuerto de Cuidad de Cabo (menos mal, una hora más y seguramente el mismo capitán de la tripulación hubiera dado un golpe de cojín a Ariel!) Allí nos esperaba Helen y Estel, dos sudafricanas que serán nuestro anfitriones cuando regresemos a Ciudad de Cabo en una semana. La mañana siguiente, después de una breve orientación con powerpoint, hicimos un recorrido relámpago al Klipheuwel, una colección de chabolas donde algunos 3.000 personas viven en miseria en cuanto a comodidades físicas pero, para ver las caras sonrientes de los niños, parecen que es un Pedralbes o Beverly Hills. 

After 18 hours of travel, we landed at Capetown Internacional Airport (it’s a good thing we finally got there…another hour more and probably the captain himself would  have given Ariel a good shot with the pillow!) There we were met by Helen and Estel, two South African ladies who will be hosting us when we return to Capetown in a week.  The next morning, alter a quick orientation complete with powerpoint, we made a brief trip to the shantytown named Klipheuwel, a collection of tin and who-knows-what-else collection of discarded boards, cans and cement dwellings where more than a thousand people eke out a living with few physical comforts.  But to see the smiling children´s faces, you would think they were living in luxury!

1er día Durban /1st day camp in Durban

 Ahora, nos toca volar a Durban y formar parte de un campamento de unos 250 otros King’s Kids desde Holanda, Suiza, Alemania, Francia, Brasil (Ariel está contento!), China, y África. Hasta entonces!!

Now, we’re off to Durban to join a camp with 250 other King’s Kids from Holland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Brazil, China and Africa!  Until then,
